One of the most daring and intriguing winter treks is the Chadar Trek, or the Frozen River Trek, welcoming trekkers to walk on the frozen surface of the Zanskar River in Ladakh. This trek takes between 6 to 9 days and covers approximately 62 to 105 km, depending on the route. It guides you through ice terrains, waterfalls, and cliffs, all amidst the majestic Himalayas.

The trek begins at Leh, where proper rest is necessary because most parts involve altitudes above 3,500m. From Leh, trekkers move to the starting point at Chilling, trekking over ice formed by the frozen Zanskar River. The expedition entails temperatures below freezing, often reaching -30°C, challenging both physical and mental endurance.Sights include the spectacular Nerak Waterfall, frozen mid-flow, and hikes to isolated Zanskari villages like Nerak and the impressive Tibb Cave, where local people showcase their ancient ways of life. Nights are spent in caves or tents erected on the frozen riverbed under a clear sky.The ideal season for the Chadar Trek is from mid-January to mid-February, when the ice is strong enough for walking. It is important to be in good physical condition, have some trekking experience, and be prepared for extremely cold temperatures.
